NYLON NYLON NYLON

Yet again, things I've made for NYLON these days. Click the images to read the article accompanying it.

By the way - if you look at the last one, it's about the fact that Apple's new TV commercial for the iTouch shows the NYLON magazine website. If you look at the page they show on the iTouch, look to the upper righthand corner.

I made that ad.

You can see the commercial (as of posting date) on the Apple website here or on YouTube here.

woodley & bunny: the boutique

Yesterday morning I got to check out Woodley & Bunny's new clothing boutique and take a few picture for NYLON. The store officially opens with full hours later in March, but it's practically set up and ready for business from the look of it. The boutique is in the space where the salon originally was house and boasts beautiful wood floors, lots of open space, lots of small lights above, and an overall hip, loft-like feel to it. They have everything wearable imaginable in there: clothing, accessories, sunglasses, belts, shoes, even clothing for guys. A very small selection of the photos I took there are on NYLON's site now so just click the graphic above to see them and read Samantha's far more eloquent write-up about the boutique, salon, and apothecary.

things i've made for nylon. yet again.

More graphics I've made for NYLON below. They just keep coming, I know. Don't get bored. Lately I've been working a lot on building up a cache of new ad banners for nylonmag.com. That way we can change them every week or so and keep the page looking "fresh" until we get more advertisers to give us lots of money to put their banners on the site as well.

Click the graphics to see the article accompanying them, or just bask in my photoshop glory from the distance of this page.

fast times at fat cat

Saturday night, the roomies and I (minus Alex, but including Chris Z, the long-term temporary couch-crashing roommate) went to check out a place called Fat Cat in the West Village/Greenwich Village area. They have amazing live jazz every night until closing, but as we found out, on a weekend night, you better get there pretty early (think 7-8pm) to get a seat on one of the couches to listen. In addition though, they have far too many other activities to keep you busy - pool, ping pong, scrabble, foosball, shuffleboard, chess, you name it. The place was packed - with NYU undergrads because of the location... - but pretty fun and engaging. Towards the end of the evening, I hunkered down with my camera and just took some fun action shots of the boys playing ping pong.

Click 'em to see the entire album as always.

tigger tackles the mountain, er medicine cabinet.

Our cat, Tigger, is quite the climber. On Saturday we were all in the living room and heard him meowing from the bathroom. When we went to see what was going on, it turned out he had climbed up to the top of the medicine cabinet over the sink somehow and was sitting proud. We brought him back down to earth and then I photo-documented every step of his journey to the highest point in the room. See below, every step of his journey. Click any of the images if you'd like to see the full album.

Sittin' proud at the top of the world.

work.work.work

I was bouncing around from computer to computer today at work - typing, printing, scanning, photocopying, filing. At one of the computers I decided to clear the recycle bin and got this idea from it. Shot a couple quick photos as soon as things died down a bit and I had a free second to myself.

Doesn't look like much, I know.

But look closer, and you'll understand.

my next art project.

So after Marc and I finished our photowalk on Saturday, he hung around the apartment for a bit and we wound up playing around with some of the vintage cameras I've begun collecting in the past few months. We noticed some fun reflections going on and snapped a few quick shots and now I'm itching to do an entire photo series on images like these:

photowalk #2.

Marc and I finally went on our second (obviously not weekly) photowalk on Saturday. This time we went straight for food at Fabiane's and then just decided to stay local, wandering around the fringes of Williamsburg, first as close to the water as we could get, then south, then east. Then I found a big wooden mirror and threw it over my back (OK, Marc carried it for most of the trip back) to take home and turn into an art project (I've had a can of neon pink spraypaint just itching to be used on my bookshelf for months now) so we were forced to head back to my apartment.

It was a gorgeous day out and my 'burg is full of fun graffiti. Here are some of the images, but as always, click on any one of them for the full album.

meet tigger, new roommate.

Everyone say hello to Tigger, our new cat. He used to belong to my cousin Nigal and her family, but got to be a bit too much for them over there and it just so happened that all the apartment-mates and I were starting to itch for a real (ie. something furry and loving, unlike the turtles) pet. Our lease says we can't have any big dogs, and small ones only with our landlord's OK, but there is nada about having a cat. I brought him home with me after a weekend visit upstate just over a week ago and he's already getting used to me shoving the camera at him every 5 minutes. Click to image to see more photos of him.

a super simple way to help the world

There are sites out there, that much like the "insert a dime and you'll save an acre of rainforest" bubblegum machines you sometimes come across in museums, zoos, and aquariums, you can do something so tiny, you'll have a hard time believing you're doing something good for the world. I used to be a dedicated, die-hard clicker, with several sites bookmarked that I'd kick myself if I forgot to visit and do my daily clicks by midnight every night. Each time you click on these websites, some environmental, animal rights, civil rights, or otherwise similar extremely worthy cause feels the benefit, through ad revenue or donations or promised contributions.

Care2 is one of the best sites for supporting such causes. Aside from having 10 separate causes to click for, they have news, social networking, a daily action section, and a petitionsite, where you can put your digital signature on virtually any petition imaginable to support any cause which might interest you out there.

There are other websites out there like this, unfortunately they were bookmarked on my old laptop. So in the future, expect more helpful suggestions like this one, and for now, swing by and do your part every time you go online to check your email. It could NOT be any easier to make a difference in the world, no matter how busy you are.

Awkward NYC encounters. The blog.

A big thanks to Manhattan Users Guide for spreading the word about The Disconnection, a blog following one girl's strange interactions, encounters, and overheard conversations in New York. Kind of like Overheard In New York, but personal, it's a fun and easy display of all the ridiculous characters we Nueva Yorkers come across every day.

Kate Moross makes awesome T-Shirts.

Came across these shirts via CoolHunting today.

The shirts are limited edition, the design is simple yet inspired, the designer - Kate Moross - is quirky (check out her window doodles for the capsule collection she created for TopShop), adorable, and has a fantastic celeb following.

Buy me one of these if you love me.

Playing catch-up. Part 3.

Yet another, NYLON gallery. I didn't take the photos, but I edited them and made this graphic for the website.

I also made this super simple graphic for a gallery of images (that I also didn't take) from model Agyness Deyn's birthday party.

Playing catch-up. Part 2.

Jenni Kayne was quite possibly my favorite show that I attended fashion week - in the sense that I would most want to wear the clothes I saw there. It was a great way to end the week.

The show was a presentation, ie. not a runway show. The models are dressed up and arranged how the designer chooses and the press and whoever else is invited comes and stares at them and the living mannequins creep you out by staring deep into your soul but not moving unless told to by a higher up or a camera-wielder.

I made this graphic for NYLONmag.com and some of the images are up on the website. Flickr album of all, unedited images to come soon. For now, click the graphic to see the NYLON gallery.

This is from last week. I set up the swag ("styled" even?) on the conference room table, photographed, and then made the graphic to go with it.

Check. It. Out.

NYLON graphics a-go-go

So Fashion Week kind of got to me in the end. It was a lot to do on top of two jobs and a full-time grad school schedule at night. My deepest apologies for falling behind on this blog. Starting tonight, I'm going to be trying to catch up my previous blogging speed. To start, here are some new graphics I worked on at NYLON today.

HYmini - handheld wind or solar power

When I first started living by myself, I finally began to feel the pain of the many bills which come along with living by yourself - gas, electricity, cable, internet, etc. At first, I began looking for ways to shave pennies off of these bills, but this sort of spurred my now strong views on conservation and recycling. Now, instead of unplugging my microwave when I'm not using it simply as an attempt to save a few cents per month on my electricity bill, I do it even more so to save precious wattage that would otherwise be used to power that little clock that I never check. In addition to the measures I've adopted into my life to save time, energy, carbon dioxide, and money, I'm always looking for new ways to reduce my carbon footprint more and more.

This is my dream tool, realized.

The HYmini is, according the the website "A revolutionary way of capturing renewable power for your iPod, mobile phones, PDA, mp3, digital camera." It's a small tool for capturing green energy at any time for use rather than plugging in your charger yet again.

The first device captures wind energy.
You can even attach it to you bike or arm to capture wind energy while out exercising:

The second is a mini solar panel and you can buy multiple panels and link them together to harness more energy at once:

And neither one is very expensive. Amazing. It's about time these things existed more prominently in popular culture.

One Less Desk

So I just came across this and think it's fantastic. I've been trying to come up with ways to declutter my life this year. It's kind of my unofficial new years resolution - an idea I've been considering in the back of my head for months and months, but never concretely dedicated myself to. It's called OneLessDesk by Heckler Design and it's key purpose it to banish the olden days of large hulking desks clutters with stacks of papers and doodads no one really needs. It's simple and modeled on the streamlined Apple aesthetic. A little bit on the expensive side though, at least for someone like me, but the idea itself is what I'm really in love with.

Thakoon. Swoon.

My current designer crush is now, officially, Thakoon. He's an American fashion designer, born in Thailand, but moved to the states at 11. Starting with a Business degree from Boston University, he came to New York, worked as a fashion writer and finally entered Parsons School of Design. Since then, he's blown up. His Fall 2008 collection eeks of military, with the jackets and wool, with splashes of punchy color, patterns, and plaid. Love.

I started out backstage while the models were getting their hair and makeup done and amidst photographers, videographers, journalists, and the like, Anna Wintour was talking (and smiling) to Thakoon himself.

Lutz & Patmos Fall 2008 Collection

Tonight was the showing for Lutz & Patmos Fall 2008 collection at the New Museum. Tina and Marcia are the designers who create beautiful, simple, high-quality sweaters and knitwear. For this collection, they added more colors than their designs have had in the past, but none of it is over-the-top bright and in your face. It's all very demure and classy - as classy as a very simple sweater design can get I guess. For their celebrity co-design, something they do each collection, they teamed up with Kirsten Dunst to create a simple, sweater mini with a blend of wool and alpaca. It's incredibly soft, but looks and feels more substantial than just cashmere by itself.

Here are some of the photos I took at the showing. Click on any to see the entire album.

Alexandre Herchcovitch at NY Fashion Week

Yesterday afternoon I went and sat front row at the Alexandre Herchcovitch runway show for New York's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The Fall 2008 collection was amazing - with a series of all black pieces showcasing varying textures, a set of more patterned and dizzying, flowing pieces, and some bright, block-printed dresses. The shoes looked difficult to walk in, with an extra spike at the end of every booted heel, but I have to admit, I fell in love with the teal blue ones shown below and if I could pull them off (or afford them for that matter) I'd die to wear them every day. For that matter, I'd love to wear all the luxuriously glam pieces that waltzed by me yesterday. I heart this collection.

Click any of the pictures to see the full album.

Oh and by the way, Niki Taylor was next to me front row, with all of the contestants from her reality show Make Me A Supermodel

and across the way were some noticeable MisShapes faces.

And then afterward, as I was leaving, I spotted Agyness Deyn crossing the street heading toward the tents, practically unnoticed by every other person around her.
